I just noticed that you can see where I stayed. My room was the one with the open door.
I went for a little drive.
My first stop was at B on the map. I mistook it for an official outlook and it ended up being a nice walk in the woods. It turns out to be the track to Shoshone Point.
As usual I was playing Spotthe.
Spot the cricket.
Bird.
Lizard.
And the closeups.
Cricket. Bird. Lizard.
It was a decent walk, 20 minutes or so to reach the rim, but the view was worth it when I got there.
(Spotthe again, people.)
The clouds were making fantastic shadows.
Long way down, but plenty of things to tumble against. ;)
The natural standing stone on the end of the point.
Looking north west, this is the corner that the canyon turns around and heads north. The spikey point is Vishnu Temple.
A last peek of the Colorado river before heading back to the car. My next stop was planned to be the tower that is a speck on the point just right of centre.
Which according to this sign, was 21.7 km away, as the condor flies.
This was the next quick stop at C, just in the carpark on the side of the road.
I then stopped at Grandview Point where there used to be a hotel about 50 metres from the edge. (I'd show you the signs, but you may be getting sick of them.) There was also a mine in the cliffs down from the point. The photo is looking west.
I gave in and stopped at the Tusayan Ruins.
Yeah, I know. Another sign. That's because the ruins looked like this.
I finally made it to Desert view and the watch tower at F on the map. This is looking north.
And back around to the west.
The watch tower was designed by Mary Colter in 1932, to resemble a local Native American Indian tower.
The inside looked like a spirit tent. It has steel frame supporting the floor.
The view was good from the top.
I then exited the park and drove for a while. I stopped at an outlook on the Little Colorado river.
Some of the rock/sand features on the side of the road looked like the remains of mining but I'm reasonably sure they are natural.
The road approached a small mountain range.
That just kept going ...
And going ...
And going.
This is from the lookout at H
More tomorrow. (and more signs ... ;))
