Still More San Francisco.

Are you bored yet ?!? ;)

Part one, Part Two, Part Three and the map again.

Did I mention the hill was steep ? This is obviously why they need a cable car, but when I was there the queue was too long and so I decided to walk it.

You know it's a steep hill when the pavement has grooves in it for traction.

This is a ground floor apartment halfway up the hill....

...and this is it's view.

Looking back down the hill.

The cable car coming down the hill.

I made it to the top of the hill and the side street is apparently the twistiest street in San Francisco.

Some of the architecture is interesting.

The classic view of Lombard st with all the tourists driving down the switchbacks.

I wandered across to this church where there was a wedding just finishing and they had a very unusual wedding vehicle.

The church was more ostentatious than the Paris ones but looked cheaper and didn't feel as old.

Posing for photos.

Looking back down at the church. Lombard st is two streets to the right.

Looking up the hill towards Coit Tower. Another hill to climb.

Looking down the side streets on the way up the hill.

And I finally made it to Coit tower and paid my $5 and went up for a look.

But that's for tomorrow.

More San Francisco

Part One, Part Two, if you need to catch up. And the map too.

I kept walking until I got to Pier 39 (Point C on the map), this is the tourist trap area of San Francisco water front. This is looking back at the entrance of the Pier from the upper level.

The whole area is done as old fisherman's wharves and it nearly didn't get done at all. Here's the full story.

This is looking the other way down the main stretch towards the carousel near the end.

One thing that Pier 39 is famous for is it's sea lion colony. I couldn't believe the crowd that was watching them. They weren't doing much, just the occasional bellowing and pushing each other into the water.

The end of the pier looking towards Alcatraz and Angel Islands. It was a little windy as this is the corner of the land that juts into the bay and is exposed to the winds coming on the entrance.

Just to make sure that you know exactly where I am ...

Classic view of Alcatraz Island.

Looking back towards the Bay Bridge and Treasure Island. This is the other part of the bridge that is on the other side of Yerba Buena Island.

More lions.

I lashed out and spent $3 on a bread museum. There were free sample of their bread and the sourdough was delicious.

There was a quiz to determine what type of bread you were and I turned out to be walnut !

Another interesting fact.

No, don't go, I've got lots more bread facts ...

This is the bread room, Dough is made on the upper floor and goes down to a machine that rolls it into balls, they are then stored in warm cupboards under the dough making area and then baked in ovens down the far left.

Ok, enough on the bread, there are lots more photos in the gallery if you are interested. This is crab corner where there are a dozen or so stalls selling different ways of doing crab.

They mostly seemed to be the Dungeness Crab.

I found a t-shirt for Livi...

I saw one of the classic American fire engine, with the guy in the cab at the back steering the back wheels.

I eventually made it to the Cable car on Hyde St and the adventure continues from here.

Tomorrow. ;)

Bike !

I rode my bike to work for the first time today. It's a long, long ride. ;)
Robert walk so I carried his computer in my backpack.

San Francisco Stroll Part the Second.

After lunch, we strolled through the market and saw some interesting stores. This was Boccalone and their slogan was "Tasty Salted Pig Parts" Yum !

Chrissie bought some olive oil from this store that was lime infused and very delicious.

It was next door to the Far West Fungi and Wild Forest Products store, that had the most amazing array of mushrooms that I've seen, including blue ones, some that looked like balls of wool, fairy rings and sea beans !

Chrissie got lost in Sur la Table, either that or she was racking up some serious shopping time.

They had the Juila Childs shrine ! ;)

Robert and Chrissie then went back to the car and I kept going back past the tower on the top of the market and along the shorefront.

Past more trams ...

And looking back at the city.

Looking back at the Bay Bridge with yachts and row boats and the shipyards at Oakland Harbour.

Looking up the hill at the Coit Tower perched on Telegraph Hill.

Two photos looking back at the city from this pier.

Coit Tower is on the right.

Another couple of trams.

Including a Melbourne one !!

The button you pushing for walking isn't really a button, you just touch it with your finger and it registers.

I found Pier 29 1/2.

Tomorrow there will be more strolling, some walking and bread. Also the delights of Pier 39.
