New York - Day Two The end.

After, well I hesitate to call it dinner but I guess it was our evening meal in the strictest sense, we wandered west towards the setting sun.

We walked past the Rockefeller Centre and looked up.

Yep, we were up there.

All around the Rockefeller block were wonderful Art Deco details, like this tree surround.

Statues.

And murals.

We walked past the NBC experience store which had a large ball of lights inside and was displaying messages about the various TV shows.

And lollipops too.

Chrisites was opposite the NBC store.

With some interesting art in the window. I'm guessing it's a strange tribute to the Twin Towers.

This is the Rockefeller Extension.

We found that we had wandered out next to Radio City Music Hall.

As we walked towards Time Square, we found a Magnolia Bakery on the corner of the Rockefeller Centre.

They were still very busy, even at quarter past nine at night.

This is one of the roads leading down to Times Square.

We finally spotted Times Square in the distance and realised that we were actually 5 blocks from it.

Since we were both tired and foot sore we walked away from Times Square and back to the Time Warner building.

And went home.

We did make it back to Times Square, but that's for another day. ;)

New York - Day Two Going up.

A tilt-shift lens is one that allows the optical elements in the lens to be moved relative to the camera body. Tilt is angling the lens away or toward the film plane, which has the effect of lengthening or shortening the depth of field (See the Scheimpflug principle). Shift is moving the lens up or down and side to side, keeping the lens parallel to the camera body. This has the effect of raising or lowering the apparent camera position.

This photo has been taken by leaning the camera and lens back until all the building is in the photo. If you look at either edge of the they are angled and appear to be converging to a point. The building looks like it is falling backwards.

In this photo, the camera body is held vertically and the lens is shifted up until all the building is in the photo. Notice that the edges of the building are a lot straighter and it doesn't look like it's falling backwards.

Anyway, enough of the photography lesson. We kept wandering down Fith Ave, we made various detours, until we made it to the Rockefeller Centre. One of the building along the way was the Trump Tower.

The Rockefeller Centre was too tall to get into one photo.

The Radio City Music Hall is also part of the complex.

The view from the top was awesome. Looking south to the Empire state building.

Looking North over Central Park. The lake in the distance is the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir, that we walked around in the morning. The shell at the bottom of the photo is part of the decoration on top of the tower.

We sat down for a while to enjoy the sunshine and watch the other crazy tourists. (The mark in the glass aren't there, they are optical patterns due to my polariser.)

We were fascinating by the tops of the buildings below us. Most of the them had big airconditioning fans, but some had lawns and there were also restaurants on the top floor.

They also came in all shapes and sizes and I think some of them, wouldn't see the sun.

There were two levels to the viewing area, which was a good thing as there were a lot of tourists.

Looking northwest across the Sheep Meadow in the corner of Central Park. It did actually have sheep grazing there until 1934. The bridge in the distance is the George Washington bridge.

I also played around with the tilt shift lens, changing the depth of field to make the city look like a miniature model.

We also spotted Time Square, hiding in between the buildings.

There was an awesome display in the shop windows opposite the entrance to the observation deck, that was made from slides.

The beam of slides widened out as it went through several windows.

Closeup you could see the annotations and notes that people had made on the slides.

We stopped for some dinner that turned out to be very, very ordinary, probably the worst meal we ate in New York. We also wandered down to Times Square, but that's for tomorrow. ;)

New York - Day Two moreish ...

After lunch at Bouchon, we wandered away from Columbus Circle and found Petrossian Boutique, which was on our map. I didn't even have time to get a proper photo of the entrance before someone was up the steps and in. Here's a map to help you.

Inside they had one side dedicated to seafood and caviar, and the other side was pastries and chocolates. They had some delicious looking tarts in the window.

We walked down the edge of Central Park to the little park with Pultizer Fountain in it. The Plaza Hotel's entrance opened onto the park.

The was a sculpture display in the fountain of an interpretation of the Chinese Zodiac symbols.

The amount of detail in some of the sculptures was incredible.

The dragon was cool too.

I was also playing around with the tilt shift lens that I'd borrowed, (Thanks Steph).

We then walked north up 5th Ave to the Frick Collection. We were very disappointed that we were informed after we had paid our entrance fee, that there was no photography allowed. Hence this surreptitious photo of the ceiling. ;)

After looking at the small, lifeless, disappointing collection at the Frick, (no, no bitterness there), we walked back down 5th Ave and some of the side streets looking at the buildings and the fashion. Of course ... ;)

I think this was a Jewish church.

Some of the gardens outside the apartment blocks were immaculate.

The Flamingo dress was cool.

We ended up in one of the department store, "To escape the heat." or so I was told. This girl was marking out a very good optical illusion. If you look closely the door is actually in a corner.

I spotted these two, they were both shopping and the lady on the left is the other one's doctor, and they were discussing how she had an allergic reaction to her last treatment of Botox injections. Ugh.

Here's a teaser for the next post. ;)
